Mike McCarthy
Mike McCarthy replaced Mike Sherman as coach of the Green Bay Packers. starting his coaching career with the University of Pittsburgh, he moved on to the NFL with the Chiefs, and on to the Green Bay Packers as an assistant. When working under Ray Rhodes, McCarthy was fired along with the entire staff, after Ray’s one season as Green Bay’s coach. McCarthy moved on to work with the Saints. In 2002 as offensive coordinator for the Saints, he won the award of assistant of the year. After one year with San Francisco, McCarthy was interviewed and hired by Ted Thompson. McCarthy, a young coach, led the packers to an 8-8 season. The Packers won their last four games in that season, and went on to go 8-1 in 2007. That was one of the best records attained for a young head coach in the NFL, and close to the best start in Packers history. McCarthy’s no nonsense style seems to work for the Packers. In his second year as coach, McCarthy brought the Green Bay Packers within one bad play of going to the 2008 Super Bowl. The Packers finished the season at 13-3, NFC North Champs, and earned a first round bye. McCarthy’s Packers went down by 14 points in the first two minutes of their playoff game against Seattle. As the snow started to fall, the Packers roared back and defeated the Seahawks with relative ease. With temperatures that rivaled the famous Ice Bowl, the Packers lost the NFC Championship against the N.Y. Giants. Mike McCarthy’s ability to make second half adjustments stand out. Under his guidance, the Packers were high point scorers in the third and fourth quarters of most games. He was second in voting for Coach Of The Year for 2007. He was the Motorola coach of the year, and went to to be coach for the NFC in the 2007 Pro Bowl in Hawaii. In 2008, McCarthy agreed to a five year contract extention with the Packers. He did not lead his team to a winning season in 2008. Favre moved on, and Aaron Rodgers took the helm. The Packers defense had a tough time keeping the team in the lead when the score was close. That prompted McCarthy to acquire a new defensive leader. Dom Capers has installed the 3-4 defense, and the Packers hope to bring those close games to a happy ending. © 2010 GreenBayPackersTicket.net Terms of Service |
