More Info
Desmond Bishop was selected by the Green Bay Packers in the sixth round of the 2007 NFL draft, with the 192nd pick overall. Bishop, who was a standout middle linebacker in college, will join a crowded linebacking corps that includes fellow rookies Korey Hall (also asixth round draft pick this year), Juwan Simpson, Rory Johnson, and Spencer Havner. Desmond Bishop will face stiff competition to make the Packers’ roster and see playing time at Lambeau Field in 2007.

Bishop played two seasons at the University of California, after transferring from San Francisco City College. In his second year at SFCC, Bishop was named California’s Junior College Defensive Player of the Year. Carrying that with him, he joined the University of California Golden Bears roster the following season and saw playing time in every game, earning second team All-Pac 10 honors in the process. He came into his season highly touted, earning preseason All-American honors from Rivals.com. Bishop led the Pac-10 in tackles with 126, with an average of 9.7 per game, which was 14th in the nation. He earned the Defensive Most Valuable Player Award in a Holiday Bowl rout of Texas A&M, and was named First Team All-Pac 10. His stellar senior season earned Desmond Bishop a spot in the East-West Shrine Bowl All-Star Game.

Bishop grew up in Fairfield, California, where he attended Fairfield High School. His father, Dennis Bishop, played professional football in the United States Football League. He graduated from the University of California with a degree in interdisciplinary studies.

Desmond played mostly on special teams during the 2007 season. A shoulder injury kept him on the bench at times, but near the end of the season, he played three quarters in replacement for Nick Barnett.

Bishop was out for four weeks after the September Giants game. Upon his return, he played at Denver, but was inactive for the Kansas City and Minnesota games. He played one play on defense on the road at Detroit. Desmond’s best game came against St. Louis where he had four special teams tackles.

In 2008 Bishop played in 15 regular season games and started one of them. He made 27 tackles total, 18 of which were solo and he also made one sack. He was a leader for the team with three forced fumbles and he finished third on the team with 15 special teams tackles. He was a continuous aid throughout the season, taking out players and taking defensive snaps. He was a major player at the Minnesota game in the second half when he forced running back Adrian Peterson to fumble. He added a season-high three special teams tackles during this game and he made a key block on a 59-yard interception from Nick Collins. The 2009 season should be exciting to see this up and coming Packer shine on the field.
