In 1890, Frederick Pabst had a theater built to celebrate the strong influence of German culture in Milwaukee. Sadly, that theater was destroyed by fire. Luckily, Pabst commissioned Otto Strack to build a new theater. The Pabst Theater was opened in 1895 with leading edge technology for the time. These innovations include an air cooling system requiring lots of ice, electric illumination, fire curtains (lesson learned) and a counterweight system for moving scenery that is considered one of the first and is still in use today. Designed in late Victorian fashion, the building was fully restored in the 1970's, after which the building was added to the State of Wisconsin Historical Sites, City of Milwaukee Landmarks and National Historical Landmarks. Acoustically, The Pabst is well known for bands commenting on how wonderful the sound is. Due to its great acoustics and beautiful seating, the 1,342 seat venue hosts top performers throughout the year. Over the past century, the venue has hosted comedians, theater groups, musicians and various other performers. While in Milwaukee, The Pabst Theater is a must visit venue.
