Opened in 1969, the Performing Arts Center became the center of the downtown theater district at 929 N. Water Street. Renamed the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts in 1994 after a $25 Million donation from the Marcus Corporation, the facility is still owned by Milwaukee County and is home to the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, Florentine Opera Company, Milwaukee Ballet Company, First Stage Milwaukee, Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra, and various Broadway performances in Milwaukee. The structure was designed by Harry Weese, a Chicago architect that also designed the Time Life Building in Chicago. Using inspiration from geometry and concrete, the building is a striking landmark on the Milwaukee skyline. Within the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts are several different theater and entertainment areas for banquets, receptions, and performances. The venue includes Uihlein Hall for musical entertainment can seat over 2,000 and is the main hall in the center. Other musical halls in the facility include Uihlein Hall, Todd Wehr Hall, Vogel Hall and the Peck Pavilion. Each serves different purposes and seating capacities.
